Reducing barriers to heart treatments in South Carolina.

Equity Starts from the Heart aims to broaden access to innovative heart treatments and raise awareness of disparities in health treatments in South Carolina.

  • 89.7% of TAVR patients in Spartanburg, Laurens, Union, and Cherokee counties have been white. 9.7% have been black despite having similar levels of risk for aortic stenosis. The racial demographics of those counties are 73.5% white and 22.1% black.

*This is a statistically significant difference as determined by a chi-square test.

  • Of those who had a heart murmur (a significant indicator of a potentially fatal heart condition solvable by TAVR or other similar procedures), 50% of surveyed members did not receive any sort of further action (tests ordered such as echocardiograms, specialist referral, PCP followup).

  • 97.5% of patients who received TAVR had a PCP. In contrast, 65.7% of community-surveyed members had a PCP.

*Statistically significant by a chi-square test.
